So what kind of team could obliterate UTEP by more than 40 points?
Maybe USC? Ohio State? Or some other top 25 team, but not Tulsa. Well folks, Tulsa IS a top 25 team. The Golden Hurricane has been playing as such for weeks now, save for a letdown against Southern Methodist two Saturdays ago. Though even then, Tulsa played like an elite program, scratching and clawing its way through adversity for a 37-31 win. The Golden Hurricane entered its matchup with UTEP with something to prove after a week of feeling the sting of being snubbed by the polls. Result - 11 touchdowns en route to a big win.
And the pollsters have finally forgiven Conference USA for fooling them with East Carolina earlier this year. Tulsa is ranked No. 22 in the just-released Associated Press poll and No. 19 in the USA Today poll. Last night was simply more evidence that the 'Cane is the class of the conference and may have a shot at crashing the BCS party.
For UTEP, it's time to circle the wagons heading into a bye week. You're sitting at 3-4. That's not awful shape considering three very winnable games are coming up beginning Nov. 1. But the Miners will need to tune out all the critics and fans who will be harping on them over this debacle against Tulsa. A loss was very likely going into this game. And now that it's done, it's time to leave it behind and focus on Rice.
This season is far from over and there is still plenty left to play for.
